La Boca

Packaging | school project

The objective of this project was to package a cultural item of a certain country as assigned. The design would reflect the culture yet have a contemporary look. I was assigned Argentina and the item I chose was a yerba mate gourd. Yerba Mate is considered the official drink of Argentina. It is traditionally drunk out of a mate gourd with a bombilla straw to filter out the mate infusion.

In designing the packaging, I was inspired by a neighborhood in Buenos Aires called “La Boca”. Sitting at the mouth of the Matanza River, La Boca is best known for its many colorful houses and a famous street, the Caminito, where tango lives. I wanted the package to represent a building yet have a very unique shape, so I made a 5-sided box with a tilted roof, creating many beautiful lines and geometric shapes. The die cuts are represented as windows in the building, and the color palette comes directly from the neighborhood.
